Summer in Svalbard is...

July and August, 2011
Svalbard means glaciers, and lots of them, Here is a melt waterfall in the face of Austfonna!

A rare glimpse of a HUGE blue whale surfacing off the continental shelf. Blues are ever so slowly making a comeback here in the far north, let's hope it continues!

First year sea ice surrounds us in Bjornsundet (Bear Sound) as the National Geographic Explorer pushes to circumnavigate Spitsbergen.

Early season brings lots of ice into Hornsund (Horn Sound), making for beautiful foregrounds!

Jamie kneeling down to get close to rare soda straw ice formations on Edgeoya.

CT Ticknor leading a hike at the base of Gnolloden, a black-legged kittiwake breeding area.

Svalbard also means warm friendships in cool climates. Here is National Geographic photographer Sisse Brimberg stalking image opportunities behind her Nikon!

Ian Bullock leads a hike up for an amazing look out at Horn Sound.

Rick is working the angles pretty hard, looking for that perfect snap.

Here Elise gives a sense of scale to just how big (and thick) a walrus skull is!

I will again be leading photography expeditions to Svalbard and the high Arctic (Greenland and Iceland) in July and August of 2012. I hope to get the chance to travel with you as well. If you are interested please call 1-800-Expeditions or check us out on the web at www.expeditions.com
