Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin Blues!

December, 2006

Another ethereal day here on Maui spent with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins. I am always fascinated to watch these animals mingle, caress, and entwine their bodies so tightly within the pod. They are so perfectly hydronamic that they simply slip through the ocean seemingly with no effort at all. What a privilege to watch this dolphin society in its' natural environment...underwater!

Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins for Christmas!

December, 2006

All I want for Christmas is to spend my day with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins! These beautiful little marine mammals live in the deep waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. Here are the latest images from my recent trip to Maui...Mele Kalikimaka!

First Humpback Whale calf of the 2006/2007 season!!

December 11, 2006

Here in Hawaii the Humpback Whales are beginning to return to the islands. The first sighting that I know of was off Maui by a fishing vessel on October 12, 2006. Today I had my first encounter with a new Humpback Whale calf! She was very curious about the boat and approached several times with her mother to inspect us. A close look at her head reveals that she has many cyamid lice around the mouthline and blow holes. She even attempted to breach, though the effort was far from perfect! More practice is necessary to really catch air. Ahhhhh...The first Humpback Whale calf I have photographed of the model year 2006...And what a beauty she is!

Long Beach Common Dolphins!

November, 2006

A beautiful week of boating and snorkeling in and around Catalina Island. The channel between Long Beach and Catalina was an easy crossing as we lazily spent the day in the company of dolphins and slept out under the stars at night. What a perfect time to be here - the off season - so few other boats and lots of anchorages and moorings available! The highlight of the trip had to be these short-beaked common dolphins. Their aerial antics never cease to amaze even the most jaded photgrapher (me)! You can feel the rush as they catch serious air...
